ABOUT

Daniel Hoyem-Cavazza will conduct “Cosi fan tutte” by W. A. Mozart in Summer 2024 at the Musikverein.

Vienna-based conductor and coach Daniel Hoyem-Cavazza was born in Kiel, Germany.

His parents, internationally renowned soprano Maria de Francesca-Cavazza and well-
known tenor and later on opera director Robert Hoyem instilled in him a deep appreciation for opera and classical music from an early age.

He embarked on his musical journey at the age of 6, commencing piano studies under the
guidance of his first teacher Elisabeth van Kaick, later refining his skills with Hans-Dieter
Bauer at the Meistersinger-Konservatorium in Nuremberg, where he also received
valuable instruction in flute from Karl Schicker, the principal flutist of the Nuremberg
Philharmonic Orchestra.

From 1987 to 1993 Daniel Hoyem-Cavazza studied at the University of Music and
Performing Arts, Vienna, conducting with Karl Österreicher, furthermore opera coaching
with Harald Goertz and piano with Roswitha Heintze.

After his graduation in 1993 he was immediately engaged at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt
in Austria, where he had the opportunity to build up a large and varied repertory.
His conducting credits encompass productions of Mozart’s La finta giardiniera, Die
Entführung aus dem Serail, Le nozze di Figaro, Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Verdi’s La
traviata, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Tschaikowsky’s Evgenij Onegin, Massenet’s Manon,
Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Weill’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny.
In 1997 he was invited as a personal assistant to Asher Fisch during a new production of
Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma at the Volksoper Wien, where he also made his debut with
Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.

In 2000, he achieved significant success conducting a compelling production of Igor
Strawinsky’s The Rake’s Progress under the direction of Olivier Tambosi at the
Stadttheater Klagenfurt.

From 2001 to 2012 he was music director of the Vienna Chamber Opera and responsible
for a very specialized and yet versatile program, which featured operas by J.Haydn,
W.A.Mozart, G.C.Menotti, N.Rota, D.Schostakowitsch, B.Britten, L.Janáček, D.Milhaud,
Sir P. Maxwell Davies and A.Reimann.

During this period, he also served on the jury for preliminary auditions at the International
Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition and conducted the final concerts with prize
winners and finalists.

In 2012 he received an invitation from the Chamber Opera Schloss Rheinsberg in
Germany to conduct a new production of Kronprinz Friedrich by Siegfried Matthus.
In 2015 he debuted at the opera festival Oper im Steinbruch in St.Margarethen, Austria
with Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca and was invited again in 2017 for a highly acclaimed
production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto .
As a guest conductor he appeared at Dresdner Tage der Zeitgenössischen Musik in
Germany and Zwei Tage und Nächte Neuer Musik,Odessa in Ukraine and collaborated
with orchestras such as the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kasugai City Symphony
Orchestra, recreation-Großes Orchester Graz, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble
„die reihe“, the Orchestra of the National Theatre in Praha and the Slovak Radio
Symphony Orchestra.
