An Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes Opportunity at the Vienna Opera Academy & Festival

Join the heart of operatic creation as an Assistant Stage Director at the Vienna Opera Academy and Festival — a unique opportunity to work side by side with world-class directors and immerse yourself in the vibrant artistic environment of our summer season in Vienna.

This program is designed for emerging directors, dramaturgs, and opera enthusiasts with a passion for storytelling and stagecraft. As an Assistant Stage Director, you will actively contribute to one of four fully staged productions:

• Le nozze di Figaro

• Così fan tutte

• Carmen

• La Traviata

Each opera will have two assistant stage directors, allowing close mentorship and active participation in both creative and logistical aspects of the production.

Program Highlights

• Daily involvement in staging rehearsals, production meetings, and performance preparations

• Opportunities to lead scene rehearsals, support movement direction, and coordinate with cast and crew

• Training in dramaturgical analysis, rehearsal techniques, blocking documentation, and artist communication

• Access to all masterclasses, coaching sessions, and concerts of the Vienna Opera Academy & Festival

Your Role Includes

• Assisting in the creation and execution of the director’s vision

• Preparing rehearsal materials and maintaining the staging score

• Communicating notes and directions to the cast when needed

• Supporting costume, lighting, and technical integration during rehearsals and performances

• Observing and learning from the entire production process from concept to curtain call

Program Fee

The participation fee for Assistant Stage Directors is:
€950 EUR per person per production (Scholarships are available)
Application deadline: June 10, 2025
(includes full participation in rehearsals, mentorship, masterclasses, and attendance to all performances and events)

Housing and travel not included.

Spaces are limited to 2 assistant stage directors per production, ensuring personalized attention and deep engagement. Early applications are encouraged.
